HMPV Virus in Dubai: Symptoms, Risk Groups, and How to Manage Recovery at Home

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) may not dominate headlines the way COVID-19 did, but it is a significant respiratory pathogen that affects tens of thousands of people in the UAE every year — particularly children under five, adults over 65, and anyone with a compromised immune system. In early 2025, HMPV saw a notable uptick in reported cases across Asia and the Middle East. This guide explains what HMPV is, how to recognise it, and how Pflege Home Healthcare can support your recovery — or your family's — without requiring repeated clinic visits.
What Is HMPV?
Human Metapneumovirus is an RNA virus in the Pneumoviridae family, first identified in 2001. It is closely related to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and causes very similar illnesses — ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe lower respiratory tract infections including bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. HMPV circulates year-round but peaks during cooler months (October to March) in the UAE.
There is currently no approved antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV. Management is therefore supportive — focusing on symptom relief, hydration, rest, and monitoring for deterioration.
HMPV Symptoms: What to Look For
Mild to Moderate Symptoms (most common in healthy adults)
• Runny nose and nasal congestion
• Dry or productive cough
• Sore throat
• Mild fever (38–38.5°C)
• Fatigue and general malaise
• Headache and body aches
Severe Symptoms (seek urgent care)
• High fever above 39.5°C that does not respond to paracetamol
• Rapid or laboured breathing — more than 30 breaths per minute in adults
• Persistent chest tightness or wheezing
• Oxygen saturation below 94% (measurable with a pulse oximeter)
• Severe lethargy, difficulty waking, or confusion
• Signs of dehydration — dry mouth, no urination for 8+ hours, sunken eyes in children
• Blue-tinged lips or fingertips (cyanosis) — this is a medical emergency
Who Is at Highest Risk from HMPV?
• Infants and children under 5 years — immature airways and immune systems
• Adults over 65 — reduced immune response and lung reserve
• Individuals with asthma, COPD, or chronic lung disease
• Immunocompromised patients — chemotherapy, HIV, organ transplant recipients
• Pregnant women — particularly in the third trimester
• Residents of care facilities where transmission can be rapid
How Is HMPV Diagnosed?
Standard HMPV diagnosis requires a nasopharyngeal swab tested via PCR — the same technology used for COVID-19 testing. Rapid antigen tests do not reliably detect HMPV. Pflege's home diagnostic service can collect a swab at your home and send it to an accredited UAE laboratory. A Pflege physician can then review results and guide treatment remotely or in person.
In most mild cases, formal testing is not necessary — clinical diagnosis based on symptoms and seasonal context is sufficient, and management is the same regardless.
How to Manage HMPV Recovery at Home in Dubai
Hydration
Adequate fluid intake is the single most important supportive measure. Adults should target 2.5–3 litres of water or electrolyte-rich fluids daily. For infants and young children, breast milk or ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) should be offered frequently. If oral hydration is failing — especially in young children or the elderly — Pflege can administer an IV hydration drip at home to restore fluid balance rapidly.
Fever Management
Paracetamol (15 mg/kg per dose for children; 500–1000 mg per dose for adults, every 4–6 hours as needed) is the first-line antipyretic. Ibuprofen can be used in adults and children over 3 months old but should be avoided if the patient is dehydrated. Do not give aspirin to children under 16.
Respiratory Support
Humidified air, saline nasal drops, and an upright sleeping position ease congestion and reduce breathing effort. For patients with asthma or COPD, existing inhalers (bronchodilators) should be used as prescribed. Pflege's respiratory therapy service can provide nebulisation, oxygen monitoring, and breathing support at home for more complex cases.
Monitoring
Track temperature, respiratory rate, and hydration status every 4–6 hours during the acute phase. A home pulse oximeter (available through Pflege's medical equipment rental service) allows accurate oxygen saturation monitoring — one of the most reliable early indicators of deterioration.
When Should You Call a Doctor?
Call Pflege's home doctor service immediately if:
• Fever persists beyond 3 days despite medication
• Breathing becomes laboured, rapid, or shallow
• Oxygen saturation drops below 94%
• Symptoms worsen after an initial period of improvement
• The patient is an infant under 3 months with any fever
• Oral intake stops entirely for more than 12 hours
Can HMPV Be Prevented?
There is no vaccine for HMPV. Prevention relies on the same principles as all respiratory viruses: regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, wearing a mask in crowded indoor spaces during peak season, and keeping high-risk individuals away from sick contacts.
Disinfecting frequently touched surfaces with standard household disinfectants is effective, as HMPV is an enveloped virus that is relatively fragile outside the body.
HMPV vs. COVID-19 vs. RSV: How to Tell Them Apart
Clinically, HMPV, RSV, and COVID-19 can look almost identical — all cause respiratory illness with cough, fever, and fatigue. Definitive differentiation requires PCR testing. However, a few practical distinctions exist: HMPV tends to peak in late winter and spring; RSV more commonly affects very young infants with prominent wheezing; COVID-19 is more likely to cause loss of taste or smell. For clinical management purposes, all three are treated with the same supportive approach.
How Pflege Supports HMPV Patients at Home
• On-site PCR swab collection and laboratory testing
• IV hydration drip for patients unable to maintain oral intake
• Respiratory therapy and nebulisation at home
• Oxygen monitoring with pulse oximeter rental
Conclusion
HMPV is a common but underdiagnosed respiratory virus that can cause serious illness in vulnerable populations. Early recognition, supportive home management, and timely medical escalation are the pillars of care. Pflege Home Healthcare makes all of this possible in the comfort of your home — with DHA-licensed doctors, nurses, and diagnostic services available 24 hours a day across Dubai.
